A Walk on the Trail

Today Erna, Peter, Breanna and I went for a walk along the Jane Adam's bike trail in Freeport Illinois. It was a wonderful time to explore the Northern Illinois natural beauty. I saw what looked like a Viceroy Butterfly and then we found this marvelous snake! Peter happened upon it with his bike. A passerby saw it and declared that it was a rattle snake. That is what most people almost always say when they see a snake. This did not surprise me because upon further investigations when we returned home we discovered that it is a Dekay's Brownsnake. It eats worms and insects but is on the menu for predators like spiders, toads, and some birds. Here is a link to find out more information about this beautiful snake if you are interested:

If I saw this snake...I would have run the other direction..no matter whether it was a rattlesnake, friendly snake, or whatever. I just do not have the nature "gene" that you all have. Bugs, frogs, snakes..whatever are cute when they are outside on the ground or in a cage at the zoo...not close to or on my skin, though. Ha!

Have fun up there..can't wait til you can stop down here. :) Love, A
