Bending the Water (not the truth)

In our electricity lab this past week we performed some really exciting experiments. One really cool one was the water bending experiment. In this experiment we tried to create a negative electron charge on a surface like a comb, a ruler, or a balloon.

I have several preserved "road kill" animals in my classroom that do a great job even in their deceased condition to charge up these objects.Next, we tried to create a small stream of water. Water (H2O) has a positive charge from the two hydrogen atoms and therefore is attracted to the comb or the balloon. This experiment proves that opposite charges attract and that static electricity can really bend water!

Science Bob
has some more ideas and variations on this experiment you may wish to try.
